Scope and Content

A collection of documents and records of the Charles Town Jockey Club associated with the construction and operation of the Charles Town Race Track and to a lesser extent, Waterford Park, now Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort, Chester, WV. 1) Bank Book, Journal, "Construction Account" for Charles Town Race Track, 16 pages, September 1933 - July 1934. 2) Book, mottled black cover with printed Stock Certificates, One side contains Common Stock Certificates and the other contains Preferred Stock Certificates, both from the Charles Town Jockey Club, Inc. Fourteen Common Stock Certificates were issued between November 7, 1934, and December 28, 1940, with notes on cash-outs from October 17, 1956. Certificates 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 13 were returned to book. Preferred Stock certificates 1-6 were issued between November 7, 1934, and December 28, 1940; all are present in book with notes on cash-out. 3) Ledger, black, bound with burgundy trim, 76 pages; 67 contain entries. Pages 1 - 20 display cash receipts between October 1956 to December 1958; pages 21 - 67 display Cash Disbursements from November 1956 - December 1958. 4) Ledger, black, bound with burgundy trim, 58 pages. Pages 1 - 19 display Cash receipts from March 1957 - November 1957; pages 20 - 27 are blank; pages 28 - 57 display Cash Disbursements from March 1957 - November 1957. Several pages enclose related adding machine tape. Six ledger pages are loosely contained within the volume: "Waterford [Park] Fall, 1957" displays data on track receipts from September - October 1957. 5) Ledger, black, bound with burgundy trim, 148 pages. Pages 1 - 33 display cash receipts from January 1955 - April 1958; pages 33 - 124 display Cash Disbursements from January 1955 - June 1959. 6) Folder 1: Misc. small pieces of paper relating to the Charles Town Jockey Club's operation, including tax receipts (1949 -1950), reports of counterfeit bills, receipt of proceeds from stock sale, and others. 7) Folder 2: Misc. papers and accounting from the Horse Show Meeting, June 14 - 17, 1939. 8) Folder 3: Five Racing Checks from The Citizens National Bank of Martinsburg with attached accounting sheets, Charles Town Jockey Club, Inc., dated between July 1939 and July 1941. 9) Folder 4: Summons for Albert T. Boyle, President of the Charles Town Jockey Club, Inc., and or W. S. Venable, the auditor and bookkeeper of the Corporation, regarding payment due John P. Briscoe, R. J. Funkhouser, and Victor Products Corporation, dated May 8, 1951. 10. Folder 5: Tax records for the Charles Town Jockey Club, Inc., 1949 - 1950 including list of Contributions to Charity 1935 - 1945. 11. Folder 6: Misc. receipts and ledgers for Pari-Mutuel Counting Room Cashiers. 12. Folder 7: Annual Reports of the West Virginia Racing Commission, 1946 -1949 (staple-bound volumes). 13. Folder 8: Correspondence between Albert J. Boyle, President, Charles Town Jockey Club, Inc., their attorneys Harry H. Byrer and Charles Clagett, and the West Virginia Racing Commission regarding tax due from unclaimed pari-mutuel tickets. Also included is an opinion from Attorney Clagett for Albert J. Boyle on a grading contract at Waterford Park and tally sheet comparing the performance of Charles Town and Waterford Park. 14. Folder 9: Statements for Charles Town Jockey Club, Inc., for 1943, 1944, 1949 (July and December), 1950, and 1951. 15. Folder 10: Various documents from Harry M. Stevens, Inc., and the Charles Town Jockey Club, Inc., regarding receipts from concession operations (e.g., popcorn sales). Also a "Paid for Account of Harry M. Stevens, Inc." for labor and materials from 1949 -1951, including "Flowers for Opening Day." These may relate to the construction of Waterford Park (now Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort, Chester, WV).
