Thomas C. Green house at the corner of George and Congress streets, c. 2008. Arrow shows repair on clapboards where a shell entered the wall. A shell was found unexploded inside the wall of the Thomas C. Green house on the southeast corner of George and Congress Streets, Charles Town, during renovation after its purchase by American Public University System (APUS). Green was mayor during the Civil War. Confederate General John Imboden on Oct. 18, 1863 was shelling the court house and jail to dislodge federal troops inside. The shell was probably from that attack.Acquisition
