The first Kearneysville Post Office was established March 22, 1840. Service was discontinued April 8, 1864, and reestablished July 7, 1865. In 1870 during post-Civil War reconstruction, the post office was listed as being in "Averell Township," to honor General William A. Averell, commander of U. S. cavalry troops.
