Collection consists primarily of business records and correspondence between Henry St. John Shepherd (1825-1901), Shepherdstown, and people with whom he conducted business in coal, crops, and farm implements. Finding aid is attached in Media file.

ARC661-1. Letter to Abraham Shepherd (1787-1853) (Henry St. John Shepherd's father; Henry St. John was 19 years of age.), Shepherds Town, Virginia, from his brother, Rezin D. Shepherd (1784-1865), in New Orleans, dated Mar. 20, 1845, postmarked New Orleans, La., Mar. 21 (Scans: ARC661-S-1-a-d).
ARC661-2. Envelope containing three account sales receipts addressed to H. St. John Shepherd, Martinsburg, W. Va., from Riddle & Fisher, Commission Merchants, 118 S. Eutaw St., Baltimore, postmarked Sep. 30. On the back of the envelope is handwritten note relating the settlement action taken on "2nd Oct 1879." The two of the account sales receipts are dated Sept. 30, 1879 and the other is dated Oct. 1, 1879.
ARC661-3. Business statement (account sales slips referred to are missing) addressed to Mr. H. St. J. Shepherd from the Office of Riddle & Fisher, Baltimore, Md., dated Oct. 1, 1879.
ARC661-4. Mch 1 - Aug 25, 1880, account for wheat and corn shipments. Includes a letter of explanation, on the third page, dated Jany 22, 1881. It is addressed to Mr. H. St. J. Shepherd from William M. Morison. Noted paid in full Jan. 24, 1881.
ARC661-5. Envelope addressed to Henry St. John Shepherd, Duffields, Jefferson Co., W. Va., from Thomas, Ludlow, & Rodgers, Springfield, Ohio, postmarked Nov. 13, 1880, Springfield. Letter to Henry St. John Shepherd on Thomas, Ludlow, & Rodgers stationery, signed E. M. Kissell.
ARC661-6. Purchase receipt for Hy. St. J. Shepherd Es, dated Sept. 30, 1881, for the sale of wheat to McCreight & Yantis, Manufacturers of Flour, Harpers Ferry, W. Va. Includes a note on the letterhead of J. A. McCreight asking Shepherd to hold the check drawn on their account "a day or two," since it's the last of the month and they need the funds for other purposes.
ARC661-7. Letter addressed to Mr. H. S. Shepherds from Coal Dealers, Springfield, Oh., dated Dec. 22, 1881. This letter is not about coal operations, but, instead, the writer, Daniel Wissinger, is asking Shepherd about visiting the Shepherdstown area in order to possibly buy a farm. (See item 1 - this letter may not be associated with item 1, however.)
ARC661-8. Personal letter addressed to Mr. Henry John Sheppard (with envelope addressed to Mr. Henry John Sheaphard, Martinsburg, W. Va., postmarked Aug. 24, 1882) from S. J. & J. W. Harris, Shippensburg, Pa., who wishes to visit Shepherd to do some fishing. The letter is dated Augs 23, 1882.

ARC661-10. Envelope containing a personal letter from Mr. Wolvington with an account statement, addressed to Mr. H. St. John Shepherd, Shepherdstown, W. Va., from Wolvington, Carr, & Co., 91 South Street, Baltimore, Md., postmarked Jan. 2. The personal letter from Mr. Wolvington dated Jan. 2, 1883, refers to the wheat and corn market. The account statement covers the period Sep. 5 [1882] through Jany. 1/[18]83, but does not provide details about the agriculture commodity.

ARC661-13. Envelope containing a sales receipt for corn, addressed to Mr. H. St. John Shepherd, Martinsburg, W. Va., from Wolvington, Carr, & Co., 91 South Street, Baltimore, Md., postmarked Oct. 4. The sales receipt for "Old & or New" corn is also an account record dated between Sept. 26 and Oct. 3rd/[18]82.

ARC661-15. Envelope addressed to Mr. Henry St. John Shepherd, Washington, D.C., in care of Dr. Daniel Breed, postmarked Nov. 10, 1882, Shenandoah Junction, W. Va. Inside envelope is a letter dated Nov. 9, 1882, of claims concerning Mr. Shepherd's drill gears.
