The first post office in Jefferson County was established in Shepherdstown on June 30, 1792. Prior to 1923, third-class post offices such as Shepherdstown were not supplied with equipment. Shepherdstown was selected as one of two experimental installations to be supplied for the first time at government expense. Hundreds of postmasters throughout the country came to Shepherdstown to voice their approval (Magazine of the Jefferson County Historical Society, December 2001, p. 37)
The first woman to be appointed postmaster in Jefferson County was Mary A. Baker of Shepherdstown whose term was from May 1867 to April 1869.
