It was in this court house on December 2, 1869 that John Brown was sentenced to be hanged for his treasonous raid on the Engine House at Harper's Ferry 8 miles distant. Jefferson County was named for Thomas Jefferson and was formed for Berkeley County in 1801. In early colonial times, Jefferson County was part of a vast territory, which spread North & East from the Williamsburg seat of government in Virginia.Acquisition
