Following the occupation of Harpers Ferry, W. Va., (then Virginia) by the Virginia Militia at the outbreak of the Civil War, Major General Kenton Harper deployed troops to watch the various approaches to the town. Troops were stationed atop Maryland Heights to report enemy approaches from the north.Acquisition
