Scope and Content

"Lost Treasures" is a collection of stories concerning Native Americans, white settlers, and their descendants who lived on or near the lower ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains east of the Shenandoah River and roughly across the river from Kabletown Road between Kabletown and the Virginia line. The stories, part of the oral history of the area, were retold by James B. Clipp, a descendant of the early settlers, to Marianna Johnson Smallwood, who prepared this manuscript. Included are stories of Native Americans; early German settlers (Jane Clipp, Joshua Clipp, and John Clipp); Rock's Ferry; Rocky Turn Road or Trail; White Oak Tavern; Mountain View store, pub, school, and meeting house; Valley View School; Valley View Sabbath School; ghost of Hog Run; Old Furnace; Civil War skirmishes involving John S. Mosby and Richard Blazer; and Polly Sullivan.
