ARC864Scope and Content
Photocopies of 85 pages of handwritten meeting minutes of the Baptist Church of Christ Zoar, 1792-1801. The first entry notes that the church was constituted on April 24, 1792, at the home of Christopher Collins, along with a list of members, both white and African American. Some, if not all, of the African Americans were enslaved.
Minutes of subsequent meetings note the members in attendance, subjects discussed, and actions taken. Collins became minister of the church in 1798. Meetings were held at his home until 1801, when the members met for the first time in the Zoar Meeting House, a building purchased from Jesse Hall. The last entry in the minutes is for a meeting held July 11, 1801.
In 1856, the congregation began meeting in Charles Town and was subsequently known as Charles Town Baptist Church.Acquisition
