Name/Title
Davenport & Willett's JournalEntry/Object ID
ARC893Scope and Content
Leather-bound ledger with hand written entries in ink. On spine is the word "JOURNAL. Front cover has what appears to be a row of sums. On front inside cover is written "Davenport & Willetts Journal." On first page is written "Davenport & Willett's-- Journal--12th July 1805."
The ledger is composed of two main parts. Page 1 of the first part has the inscription "Charlestown 25th April 1805" at the top of the page and contains entries of transactions for that day. Following are 84 numbered pages with similar inscriptions at the top and entries for each date. The last page is numbered 85 and contains an entry for April 18, 1806. After a blank page, entries begin in the second part on January 22, 1807. Each unnumbered page in this section has the inscription "Charles Town" and the date at the top of the page and a list of transactions for that date. The last entry of this second part is dated February 19, 1808. However, several pages have been cut from the ledger that might have had dated entries. Then five pages plus the inside back cover have entries dated in 1807. Many of the entries, which may or may not have been part of the second section, have been crossed through.
Within the ledger are loose pieces of paper with numbers and calcuations.
The identity of the Davenport in "Davenport & Willetts" is unknown but may be John, Abram, or Samuel Davenport. Aquila Willett is the Willett in "Davenport & Willetts." Other than 1810 census data and personal property taxes paid in Jefferson County in 1805-1807, JCM historian has not found other information on Aquila Willett.
Except for paying for a store license in Jefferson County in 1805, 1806, and 1807, the JCM historian has found no other information on Davenport & Willetts.
