Scope and Content

Two leather-bound ledgers with entries hand written in ink by mill clerk Harry L. Ronemus, recording transactions for Spring Mills: ARC895-1: Front cover is labeled "H. L. Ronemus Spring Mills Aug 11th 1890." The ledger is a day-book of transactions in chronological order from August 1890 to July 1892. ARC895-2: Transactions are from August 1890 to March 1892. Transactions are organized by customers' names. The address of each customer is given. An index to customers' names and page numbers of their accounts is at the front of the ledger. Loose papers in the ledger (ARC895-2) are: two (2) blank checks of First National Bank of Jefferson, at Charlestown; an ink blotter with an advertisement for Frank E. Fitts MFG. & Supply Co. (186 Oliver & 88 Purchase Sts. Boston); an ink blotter with an advertisement for Frank E. Fitts Mfg. and Supply Co. (166 Oliver & Purchase Sts. Boston); and a blank piece of paper. Based on the addresses written in ARC895-2, it appears that Spring Mills may have been located in the village of Spring Mills in Berkeley County. See document on Spring Mills Historic District in Media. Harry L. Ronemus (1860-1934) grew up on the Ronemus farm, Wildwood, near Duffields. He was also a clerk during the same time at Wheatland Mills (see ARC894).
