Scope and Content

Four documents concerning Ella Bassett Washington (1834-1898), a direct descendant of George Washington's sister Betty Washington Lewis and wife of Lewis Washington, great- grandnephew of George Washington. Thomas Washington inherited Beallair near Halltown through his mother, Elizabeth Beall. Ella Bassett Washington and her husband lived at Beallair a few years before and after the Civil War. The documents are ARC927-1: Photocopy of an article, "'An Army of Devils:' The Diary of Ella Washington," edited by James O. Hall, published in Civil War Times Illustrated, Vol. XVI, No. 10, February 1978, pp. 18-25 (old # W-0104). Diary entries of Ella Bassett Washington, May - June 1864, while she resided at "Clover Lea" in Hanover County Va. ARC927-2: Typed transcription (with handwritten edits) of a lecture, "Ella Bassett Washington," by James O. Hall at the Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table, May 13, 1980, 12 pp. (old # W-0102). Biography of Ella Bassett Washington. ARC927-3: Photocopy of article, "List Of Memorial Relics of George Washington, with descriptive notes - Purchased by the State in 1871, and Deposited in the Library in 1873," Annual Report of the New York State Library, unknown date, pp. 139-146 (old # W-0103). Items were purchased from Ella Bassett Washington. ARC927-4: Photocopy of an article, "More about Ella," by Eva Shillingburg, published in Research Review: The Journal of the Little Big Horn Associates, Vol. 8, No. 2, June 1994, pp. 2-8, 20. An account of Ella Bassett Washington's relationship with George Armstrong Custer.
