ARC935Scope and Content
41 loose papers found with ledgers in the J. P. Burns Family Matthew Frame Ledgers Collection (ARC867 to ARC875). The papers are primarily bills to Frame & Lock for purchases for their Charles Town business from Alexandria and Baltimore merchants in 1816.
Typically, Frame & Lock would copy the information from the Alexandria and Baltimore merchants into a ledger and not keep the loose papers. However, for some reason, 41 individual 1816 bills survived. A few of the loose bills are copied into ARC871.
The bills are organized into three folders:
Folder 1: Eight bills to Frame & Lock from Alexandria merchants, April, May, and August 1816
Folder 2: 21 bills to Frame & Lock from Baltimore merchants, May 1816
Folder 3: 12 miscellaneous merchant bills
Some with no date, no place of business; others made out to purchasers other than Frame and Lock; fragments of bills
Based on information in Matthew Frame ledgers, Frame and William French Lock (1788-1850) became partners in the Frame & Lock mercantile business in 1815 or 1816. The partnership appears to have lasted until about 1820.Acquisition
