Main Street, Charles Town, West Virginia. The shire town in Jefferson County, West Virginia is written with two words to distinguish it from Charleston, the capital of West Virginia. Charles Town, eight miles southwest of historic Harper's Ferry, was laid out in 1776 and named for its founder, Charles Washington, the youngest of the five brothers of the Father of his Country. The Jefferson County Court House, in which John Brown and his associates were tried, is just back of the trees shown on the right-hand side of this picture. Charles Town is located in one of the richest agricultural sections of the famous Shenandoah Valley.Acquisition
