Description

View of the Burnside Bridge (Middle Bridge) over Antietam Creek southeast of Sharpsburg, Maryland c. 1955. Photograph is taken from the south (downstream) side of the bridge looking from the east to the west end of the bridge. When this photograph was taken the bridge still carried vehicular traffic. The bridge figured prominently in the afternoon phase of the Battle of Sharpsburg on September, 17th, 1862. The monuments seen on the west end of the bridge have since been removed to the banks of Antietam Creek on the opposite shore. Also visible adjacent to the west end of the bridge are handrails along the footpath which leads to the observation deck on the cliffs overlooking the bridge.
