Intake arches on Virginius Island viewed from the upstream (east) end. Water from the Shenandoah River was diverted by Herr's Dam to three intake gates which regulated the depth of water in the inner basin on Virginius Island. Water from the basin ran machinery in the cotton mill and in other factories.
