Description

Jefferson's Rock Harpers Ferry, West Virginia When Thomas Jefferson stood on the rock shown on the other side and viewed the wonderful natural scenery of the county where the Shenandoah and the Potomac Rivers meet, he was inspired to write, as the did in his Notes on the State of Virginia, the following: "You stand on a very high point of land; on your right comes up the Shenandoah, having ranged along the foot of the mountains a hundred miles to find a vent; on your left approaches the Potomac, in quest of passage also. In the moment of their junction rush together against the mountain, render it assunder, and pass off to the sea. The scene is worth a voyage across the Atlantic."
