Description

Hand painted protest sign on canvas. Written in Blue is "MIDDLEWAY IS SPECIAL" with a crescent moon and scissors painted on either side in yellow.

Context

Found in the hallway between the Jefferson County Commission Meeting Room and the Museum on the day after the hearing. It remained unclaimed for approximately two weeks before being accessioned as FIC. The potential bottling plant plans being discussed at the November 12, 2024, meeting were ultimately rejected after a 7 hour session on March 11-12, 2025, at Washington High School, which had 126 locals speaking against the plant. Factored into the Commission's decision was a report from the Jefferson County Landmarks Commission on the damage to Middleway's historic character that would be caused by a high volume of large trucks traveling to and from the plant.
