Description

Handwritten leatherbound book of transactions for attorney Andrew Hunter. The ledger begins in 1865, following the Civil War, and lasts until Andrew Hunter's death. The beginning of the ledger contains a note from Hunter about the destruction of his previous records when his house, Hunter Hill, was burned by order of his cousin, Union General David Hunter, during the Civil War. Hunter makes notes of the race of his clients throughout the ledger. An index at the beginning indicates the pages of each case. Notable cases include employment by the Commonwealth of Virginia to attempt to return Jefferson County to Virginia after the war, legal counsel sought by by Ella Washington in 1873 with regard to her trying to keep Beallair. Hunter attempts to list some of his earlier cases, and notes at the beginning of the book that his previous records burned when his house, Hunter Hill, was destroyed in the war by his cousin, General David Hunter.
