Description

Happy Retreat (Blakeley Place and Mordington Avenue). Charles Washington, the founder of Charles town, built "Happy Retreat" on land left to him by his older half-brother, Lawrence. In 1780 Charles Washington constructed the two wings connecting them with a breezeway. He died in 1799 before he could carry out his plans for the center section. The mansion's center section was added in 1837, when the estate was purchased by Judge Isaac Douglass. George Washington, brother of Charles, was a frequent visitor to the home; it was here that he met with famed Revolutionary War General Daniel Morgan. When news of Lord Cornwallis' defeat was received, the Washingtons held a "grand ball" at Happy Retreat. Sketches made by Betty Davis. Information compiled by Wanda Perry.
