Scope and Content

A collection of documents relating to the Friendship Fire Company in Bolivar, municipal elections in Bolivar, and the general areas of Harpers Ferry and Bolivar. Includes: -Promissory note from the American-La France and Foamite Industries, Inc., in which the Friendship Fire Company #1, Bolivar, agrees to pay $500 with a a 6% interest rate by May 1st 1929. Note is dated October 3, 1927. -Promissory note from the Bank of Harpers Ferry, in which the Friendship Fire Co agrees to pay $452.43 by Feb 12, 1930. Note is dated Dec 14, 1929 and marked as paid Feb 13, 1930. -Insurance Card from the US Fidelity and Guaranty Company, belonging to Sherman Harrison of Harpers Ferry and pertaining to auto insurance for his Chevrolet as of Sept 27, 1934. -Receipt from Towns Print Shop in Harpers Ferry for "Fine Job Printing and Photographs" of 212 bills for $2.75, purchased by the Friendship Fire Co., dated Aug 19, 1937. -Letter from the Auditing Committee of the Friendship Fire Department explaining a clerical error made by the bank, dated Dec 31, 1937 and signed by treasurer HH Chambers. -Five (5) photostats of fundraising letters dated Sept 27, 1939, from the Friendship Fire Department to support the recent purchases of 400 ft of fire hose and insurance for the Volunteer Firemen. Letters are addressed to the Halltown Paper Board Company, the Bolivar Corporation, the Harpers Ferry Corporation, Storer College, and the Standard Lime & Stone Company, and all are written by GD Hill, president of the fire company. -Proclamation by Harpers Ferry Mayor JD Nichols proclaiming February 4, 1940 "Finland Day" and condemning the recent invasion of Finland and calling on local churches and clubs to work to "bring relief" to Finland in the days following. In a handwritten note at the bottom, Nichols asks the fire company to appoint a committee from the club to "advise what to do with the fuel," proclamation was sent on January 29, 1940. -Two (2) ballots from the Town of Bolivar's Municipal Election, held Tuesday, June 1, 1971. One has total numbers next to each vote, and a tally for a write in mayoral candidate. The other is blank with the address of Tommy Nolan written on the back. -Photostat of Intraoffice Memorandum dated Nov 14, 1977 from the Nominating Committee to the Open Floor for officers of the Friendship Fire Company. Includes names of nominees and committee members. -List of names on Friendship Fire Company stationery, on back is handwritten "Election for officers for 1978." -Copy of a 1913 postcard captioned "Ruins of the hill Top House, whih was destroyed by fire December 11, 1912. It has been replaced by the New Hill Top House."
