Greeting From Shepherd State Teachers College, Shepherdstown, West Virginia (Top left corner- Science Building, Top right corner- Miller Hall, Bottom left corner- Rumsey Hall, Bottom right corner- McMurran & Reynolds Hall) When James Rumsey propelled the first steamboat on the Potomac River at Shepherdstown on December 3, 1787, there was in existence an Academy of higher learning. The present Shepherd College was founded in September 1, 1871, with Joseph McMurran as its first Principal.
