Description

Silver-gilt vinaigrette by Shaw of England, monogrammed with initials "AP" on top. Raised design around the edge. There is an inner box with filigreed lid. Note: "Vinaigrette," in this context, refers to "a small container with a perforated top, used to contain an aromatic substance such as vinegar or smelling salts, especially popular for women in the Victorian era to combat the aroma from the waste products common in cities." Makers mark on the inside of the lid (king's head, TS, lion) was registered in 1822 by silversmith Thomas Shaw of Birmingham, England. There is also a 3-part hallmark on the inside bottom of the piece: the anchor indicates that it was manufactured in Birmingham, TS is the maker's initials, and the letter M is a date code indicating that the piece was manufactured in 1835. -FEM 12/29/2016
