Historical Hand-Atlas Illustrated, containing large-scale copper-plate maps of U.S. states and territories and Canadian provinces,a reference map of the world, topographical and railroad map of the United States, 13 maps of Bible geography, general survey of the world, history of the United States--history of each U.S. state and territory, special history of Virginia and West Virginia, outline maps and histories of Berkeley and Jefferson Counties, West Va. with condensed history of the counties; biographical sketches; general statistics; and miscellaneous topics. "A History of the Virginias" begins on page 185 and contains a history of Virginia and West Virginia from colonization to 1865. Includes 21 pages of information about the American Revolution, John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry, and the formation of West Virginia during the Civil War. Following this is an alphabetically-arranged list of the towns of West Virginia, including the county the town is located in, their corresponding post office, and their population. The next 36 pages contain a "History of Berkeley County" and a "History of Jefferson County" providing statistics, a brief history of the counties, and a description of noteworthy churches, lodges, schools, towns, and cities. Locations mentioned in Jefferson County include St. George's Chapel, Shannondale Springs, Middleway, Charlestown [Charles Town], Shepherdstown, Shepherd College, Harpers Ferry, and Storer College. Following this are maps of Jefferson County and Berkeley County marked with churches, school houses, post offices, cemeteries, roads, railroads, and creeks. The next twenty-nine pages of the atlas contains biographies for noteworthy individuals from Berkeley and Jefferson Counties (see People for list of names from Jefferson County). Physical Description: Written in pen on inside front cover is: "Property of Marianna Johnson Smallwood, Kabletown WV." On second page is written "Maggie A. Kable book given her by her husband, C. H. Kable." In a different script is written "Property of Marianna Johnson Smallwood, Kabletown, W. Va." In the same script, but different pen is "who so desires this book to be given after her death to Jane F. Rissler. Signed Marianna J. Smallwood, Mar. 24, 1971."
