Sammelband of 10 Medical Dissertations issued in Edinburgh, 1770Description
(SAMMELBAND). Sammelband of 10 Medical Dissertations issued in Edinburgh, 1770.
George Logan (1753 -1821) graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1770. Logan was a Philadelphian physician who was the grandson of James Logan, William Penn's Secretary. He later went on to serve in both the Pennsylvania legislature and senate. His contemporaries were Thomas Jefferson and Charles Willson Peale.
James McClurg (1746 - 1823) graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1770. He was a well-known physician from Virginia, who was a delegate of the Constitutional Convention, which helped frame the federal Constitution. McClurg acted as a surgeon during the American Revolution and was later promoted to the Medical Director. Later, he served as mayor of Richmond and was a member of the Medical Society of Virginia.
William Brown (1752 - 1792) graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1770. Dr. Brown was elected Surgeon General by Congress in 1777 and was Washington's physician with whom he spent a winter in Valley Forge during the American Revolution. Brown studied medicine in Scotland and came to America soon after. He published the first Pharmacopeia in the United States, which served in all military hospitals during the American Revolution. He was well acquainted with Washington, Jefferson, Rush, and Madison. Brown also served as the chairman of trustees of the Alexandria Academy at the direct request of George Washington. This particular dissertation by Brown is one of the earliest devoted to environmental medicine and atmospheric pathogens.
The sammelband was most likely put together by the University of Edinburgh for the graduating class of 1770. A very rare compilation of medical dissertations with important connections to the American Revolution.
