Snyder, Mirror of America 233. Second state of the Cole & co. issue with the figural identification key printed in the lower margin. Trumbull was an aide to George Washington in the early days of the Revolution. He spent much of the 1780s in London as a student of Benjamin West. The painting of the Declaration was painted over the years 1786 to 1797; it is now at Yale. “Thirty-six of the figures were drawn from life and nine others were copied from portraits”—Snyder, City of Independence, p.263.
