Charles Botta- HISTORY OF THE WAR OF THE INDEPENDENCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICADescription
"Most valuable history of the Revolution up to its date"-Howes. Thomas Jefferson wrote to John Adams on 10-11 August 1815 about Botta's work: "The work is nevertheless a good one, more judicious, more chaste, more classical, and more true than the party diatribe of Marshall. It's greatest fault is in having taken too much from him. I possess the work, and often recurred to considerable portions of it. ." On 15 May 1817, Jefferson again wrote to Adams, saying he was re-reading Botta and that he feels Botta "has given that history with more detail, precision and candor than any writer I have yet met with." Adams responded on 18 May: "I am not expert enough in Italian to read Botta, and I know not that he has been translated. Indeed I have been so little satisfied with Histories of the American Revolution, that I have long since, ceased to read them."-The Adams-Jefferson Correspondence, Vol. 2, p.451.Other Names and Numbers
