An Inaugural Dissertation has only been offered at auction four times since 1975. Only one copy of Observations has sold at auction in the last 50 years. James Mease (1771-1846) was a polymath--physician, scientist, and author. Mease entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1784, graduated from the College in 1787, and received his M.D. from the Medical School in 1792. "In August, 1790, while he was still a student, he published an article on hydrophobia in the American Magazine.
