Description

THE COMMITTEE APPOINTED TO PREPARE AN ACCOUNT OF THE MONIES received from the Legislature of Pennsylvania towards erecting additional buildings to the Pennsylvania Hospital, and of the consequent expenditures- BY PENNSYLVANIA HOSPITAL [Philadelphia, PA]: Office of "Poulson's American Daily Advertiser", 1803. Single sheet, 33.5 x 22.5 cm. Signed in type at conclusion by Thomas Morris and John Dorsey, of the Building Committee, "Philadelphia, 1st. month 1st. 1803," and by Samuel Coates, who transcribed the account as Secretary of the Board of Managers. Three horizontal folds, one lightly browned. A very good copy, on heavy paper watermarked "MATHEWS." Not found in Shaw & Shoemaker. OCLC locates one copy, catalogued together with a similar report of the Building Committee from 1805, held by the College of Physicians, Philadelphia. The text here lists by category approximately $72,500 expended for labor and materials, toward which nearly $25,000 had been provided by the Legislature, and $25,000 provided by Christian Febiger, with a balance of $23,114.59 borrowed by the hospital. The third (center) wing of the Hospital was completed in 1804: "Completion of the Center section allows for the opening of the surgical amphitheatre, made famous largely by the operations performed and lectures given there by Dr. Physick."
