[Franklin, James] [PEMBERTON, Ebenezer]. A Discourse Had by the Late Reverend and Learned Mr. Ebenezer Pemberton

Name/Title

[Franklin, James] [PEMBERTON, Ebenezer]. A Discourse Had by the Late Reverend and Learned Mr. Ebenezer Pemberton

Description

Affirming and Proving the Validity of Presbyterial Ordination, Boston: Printed by J. Franklin, for S. Gerrish 1718 Published in the same year that 12-year old Benjamin Franklin began his unhappy apprenticeship with his elder brother James. This was certainly one of the publications through which Franklin began to learn the printing trade at his brother's shop near the Old Meeting House. Franklin signed a nine year indenture, but five years later he'd had enough of his brother's tyrannical and abusive ways, and set out on his own for Philadelphia. Ebenezer Pemberton (1671-1717), a graduate of Harvard College, was the pastor of Old South Church, Boston. Campbell lists only 3 publications from James Franklin in 1718, two of which are these (one bound with another sermon (X2.a) , and this form (X2.b). Almost certainly one of the earliest pieces that young Benjamin Franklin had a hand in printing. WorldCat shows just one institutional holding at Yale University.
