Pennsylvania Hospital. Small Book of Subscribers' Promissory Notes, 1772-1798

The last of the books, and the only one to cross the Revolution. Its earliest note, that of the cordwainer Benjamin Paschall, was taken by Thomas Wharton on 25 February 1772 and is the last survivor of the colonial subscriptions. The other three date from the treasurership of Mordecai Lewis and were witnessed by Samuel Coates, Manager for forty years and the colleague who kept a private notebook on the lunatic patients under Benjamin Rush's care.
The final note closes the circle. John Redman Coxe, who signed for sixty dollars on 2 June 1798, was the grandson of Dr. John Redman, whose own note is No. 51 in the founders' book of 1751, and the pupil of Benjamin Rush, beside whom he had worked through the yellow fever of 1793. His is the only pledge in the collection expressed in dollars.
