In 1979, Lewis Deyong merged the Bahamas World Championship event with the European Championship, establishing the long tradition of World Championships held in Monte Carlo. In the finals, Luigi Villa of Italy
prevailed over Jeff Westheimer, USA. Sponsor Merit cigarettes added $15,000 in prize money, $5000 less than the previous year. Note that Merit was a brand owned by Phillip Morris, the previous sponsor.
