Description

This remarkable artifact appears to be an early Arthur Popper experiment in board design, applying his patented compartment design (the rails are stamped with his patent #) to a very small board. The dimensions are appropriate for 1" checkers, which slot into a quadrant with just the right amount of extra space. A handle would have seemed silly on a set so small, and the deco-style locks typical of Popper boards turned out to be just a bit to large -- the edge of the taller part of the latch sticks out over the edge - clearly not an acceptable solution, and perhaps showing why many of the small, trayless 1.25" Popper sets employ the "lever style" clasps. However, examples of 1.25" sets with deco locks have been seen, so it seems hardware simply varied over the years.
