BG-2024.0021Description
Women's "informal evening frocks" were the 1930's version of the party dress, for gatherings of the rich and fashionable for whom a game of bridge -- or increasingly, backgammon -- would be the after-dinner activity. This illustration from 'Vogue' captures the easy social appeal of backgammon, where couples could play a game amidst friends milling about, chatting following the action in a manner not possible with bridge. The postures of players and onlookers provide an opportunity for French fashion illustrator Pierre Mourgue to show off a trio of modern party dresses, incidentally promoting the game as a pastime of the ultra-fashionablePublication Details
