Description

An interesting smaller set likely by Arthur Popper (AP Games). Virtually unused, the AP Games imprint of the instruction booklet is likely original to the set. The doubling cube is in the Popper style, with substantially raised numerals from a stamping process. The cube adheres to the original 1930 scheme and employs the standard "backgammon colors," suggesting the board could be on the earlier side, perhaps before Popper's invention of checker compartments. The thin leather handle is of an unusual style, and could pre-date the bakelite ones favored by AP Games in the later 1930's. The use of small nails to affix the cork bumpers to the rails may be another sign of earlier production. Taken as a whole, this could be one of the earliest backgammon sets to sport a handle. The board also seems a virtual prototype for similar handled sets with no checker trays identified as E.S. Lowe sets by the branded booklet inside dated 1941.
