Joan Crawford across the board from Robert Young on the set of 'The Shining Hour' (1938). Director Frank Borzage looks on. She probably really did play backgammon during scene changes, though probably not on such a wobbly surface. The board pictured appears to be an AP Games set, with its dedicated compartment for the doubling cube and deco locks. Note the leather handle, suggesting the bakelite handles were of an even earlier vintage. The board looks very like the one seen in the Giner ROgers photos of the same year.Photograph Details
