Name/Title
Marshall Field & Co.Description
Marshall Field & Co. in Chicago has the distinction of having published the first known depiction of a doubling cube in this ad in the Chicago Tribune, where a cube is p[ictured twice. In a London article written in mid May 1931, Grosvenor Nicholas would refer to having “originated and introduced” the doubling cube “about a year ago,” so the cube offered in this ad must have been among the very first offered for sale. That the ad appears in a Chicago paper may owe something to the influence of backgammon writer Ralph Bond, whose games company was located on North Michigan Ave.
The $3 price for the doubling cube is relatively high, as later ads often price "doubling dice" at $.50. It is a fair guess that it was the large bakelite cubes with inlaid numerals fetching this premium price.Publication Details
