Popper Cubes

Description

Arthur Popper patented the first backgammon board with built in checker trays and separate compartments for dice and a 1' doubling cube. The cubes in his 'AP Games' sets came in a variety of colors that matched one of the checker colors. Red and Green were most common colors. "Popper Cubes" can most easily be identified by the distinctively compact configuration of the '64' side, whose numerals are more squat compared the the elongated forms of other cubes of the period. Intriguingly, a meaningful subset of Popper cubes follow a regular numeral scheme -- while the others follow no scheme at all and offer perversely different orientations of the numerals.
