Stoeger Arms Catalog SheetEntry/Object ID
BG-2026.0120Description
A single page from a 1942 'Stoeger Arms' catalog featuring backgammon sets. Stoeger was (is) primarily a firearms company, but their catalog included general equipment, including games, for the "sportsman" in much the same vein as Abercrombie & Fitch or Spaulding.
Although the catalog doesn't identify the makers of the sets, all three of the folding sets have the Lowe-style dots with outlines. The 602PC looks to have bakelite handles, while the others are leather(ette), supporting my impression that the early 40's was a transitional time for those styles — and that a bakelite handle doesn’t automatically imply a Popper set.
It’s interesting that the blurb for #602 boasts its “Built In Compartments,” suggesting they were somewhat of a big deal at the time (Popper’s patent was granted 1935). So, either they licensed the design, or violated the patent.
The description of 591 includes "pig grain fabricoid" as an exterior option.Publication Details
