Organization Description

A major games maker, E.S. Lowe appears to have entered the backgammon market in the early 1940's with boards that adopted many of the hallmarks of the AP Games sets that preceded them -- most notably the checker trays for which Arthur Popper secured a patent in 1936. It's not known whether Lowe licensed the design or simply infringed on the patent or, perhaps in some manner took over Popper's operation, as dated Popper materials seem to end right around the time Lowe's begin to appear. Folding sets with the 1941 booklet seem consistent in including leather handles, lever-style clasps, simple dotted points in the red and black "backgammon colors," a very distinctive .75" doubling cube with numerals in different colors -- and no checker trays.
