Callanan Hollywood Mortuary
1950s
Donated by Peggy Callanan Williams, 2010
The Museum of Neon Art preserves and restores numerous types of neon signs. By far the most unusual is the category of mortuary neon. This particular model was designed in a comforting and noble Colonial style with deep channel lettering and stood on a Western Avenue corner on the eastern edge of Hollywood. Look closely between the neon words, and one may see the remains of a hand-painted “Hollywood” which was once part of the mortuary’s title.
