Overlapping triangles of color shift with the viewer, creating an illusionistic space. The layers and juxtaposition of types of glass creates a dynamic and abstract rainbow effect. Ray Howlett’s pioneering work in light and sculpture is in museum collections throughout the United States. Since the late 1960s, his work has been closely associated with the Light and Space movement. Howlett’s sculptural forms transform as the viewer moves around the pieces, creating, in Howlett’s words, an ”optically expanding space.” Howlett has been experimenting with electric artworks since the age of 12, and since the early 1960s, he has been using transparency to create what he calls a “push and pull of space.”
