Papoo’s Hot Dog Show 1949 4300 West Riverside Drive, Toluca Lake, Los Angeles Donated by Leona Gardner In 1949, Papoo’s Hot Dog Show opened as a roadside hot dog stand in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles, on Riverside Boulevard. For 62 years, Papoo’s was a favorite local spot for a hot dog, beer, or a delicious breakfast. First, it was simply known as “The Hot Dog Show.” Papoo, which means grandfather in Greek, was added in the late 1970s by the new owner. The beloved eatery named all their dogs after actual dog breeds. This angelic dog never supported neon, but it is nevertheless important to the overall signage history of the businesses. The adorable Papoo’s dogs are local celebrities as well! Not only was Papoo’s a neighborhood favorite, but the shop made a cameo appearance in the 1956 sci-fi horror film, "Invasion of the Body Snatchers."
