General Electric Appliances
1950s
Donated by Randy Smith
With coral-colored neon tubing and crisp, porcelain-enamel facing, everything about this hanging sign is original to its construction in the 1950s. The sign was donated to the Museum of Neon Art still in its original, wooden shipping crate — never having been removed or used. After spending decades in a box, the sign was removed, dusted off, plugged in, and it worked just fine.
The classic General Electric logo glows in a coral color against a navy, orange, gray, and white porcelain-enamel background. Underlighting in white neon was intended to light a sidewalk or window display.
