Description

In April 1920, airmen from the Army Air Corps were forced to make an emergency landing on Cabbage Flats, near Greensboro, Monongahela Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania, as they ran low on fuel. Led by General Billy Mitchell, they were flying from Bolling Field (Washington DC) to Dayton OH. It occurred during their planning phase for a highly publicized bombing project to “sink a battleship.” They stayed with local residents and departed the next morning. A local crowd immediately gathered on Cabbage Flats. The planes are DeHavilland DH-4s used by the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWI through the early 1930s. Original, candid. NOTE: Related photos from this collection were donated to the National Museum of the Air Force (2013). Accession no. AR.2012.130.
