2018.1.9Description
This group may have posed on the occasion of the Baily-Flenniken wedding, 1 September 1870. William Nixon Baily [1842-1877] appears in the center of the back row and his wife, Mary Campbell (Flenniken) Baily [1845-1915], appears in the center of the front row. Their marriage announcement ran in the Waynesburg Republican of Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania, on 7 September 1870 (see item # 2018.1.133).
"Baily-Flenniken - On Thursday evening, September 1st, 1870, by the Rev. A. B. Miller, assisted by Rev. Dr. Bronson, at the residence of the bride's father. Mr. Will N. Baily and Miss Mary C. Flenniken, both of Waynesburg.
Not alone for the abundant and luscious cake of which we were the happy recipients, do we feel like wishing them prosperity and happiness, but for the kindly feelings we entertain for them."
Identifications believed to be:
*(1) Mary Campbell (Flenniken) Baily [1845-1915] - wife of William Nixon Baily, daughter of John Calvin Flenniken & Caroline Louise Campbell
(2) Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Flenniken [1848-1920] - son of John Calvin Flenniken & Caroline Louise Campbell
*(3) William Nixon Baily [1842-1877] - husband of Mary Campbell Flenniken
(4) Osa Ann "Ocie" Wallace [1846-1916] - daughter of Alexander Wallace & Malinda Cumpston
(5) James Workman Rinehart Smalley [1845-1901] - husband of Mary Ruth Van Vorhees, son of Edward P. Smalley and Catharine Rinehart. The caption specifies "Wook [sic Work] Smalley - not Clark" which presumably clarifies that this is James Workman Rinehart Smalley [1845-1901] and not his brother Adam Clark Smalley [1843-1905]. James Workman Rinehart Smalley moved to Kansas and later Oklahoma, while Adam Clark Smalley stayed in Greene County, Pennsylvania. This may explain why the clarification was added because local family of later generations would have known "Clark" better and perhaps not known "Work" at all.
(6) May be Miss Gordon
*William Nixon Baily and his wife, Mary Campbell (Flenniken) Bailey, were the grandparents of Ralford Baily-Purman, who married Nella Sophia Hoskinson. This relationship is most likely how the photograph came to be a part of the collection, which was later owned by Nella and then her daughter, Peggy Louise Baily.
Handwritten caption on back of photograph reads:
(1) Mary F. Bailey
(2) Frank Flenniken
(3) Wm. Bailey
(4) Ocie Wallace
(5) Wook [sic Work] Smalley - not Clark
(6) Gordon maybe
