Description

Dated 1864. Intersection of High and Washington Streets in Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania. On the southwest corner stands the Bull's Head Tavern, also known as the Union Hotel and the Adams Inn, later the location of the Downey House, and ultimately the Fort Jackson Hotel. Postcard caption reads, "An Old Street Scene, Waynesburg, Pa. The Old 'Bull's Head Tavern.' This picture was taken in 1864, upon a 'Tuesday of Court,' by Alex Wallace, dec'd. The building upon the street corner is the old 'Bull's Head Tavern,' which was superseded by the Downey House. A horse sale is in progress in the foreground." This image also appears in the Waynesburg Republican Centennial Edition (26 August 1896 – 27 August 1896), on page 15. The caption in that publication reads, "The above represents a scene in Waynesburg about the close of the war. It was taken in 1864 by Alex Wallace. For this picture, and several other old views published in our paper, we are deeply indebted to the courtesy of R. F. Downey, Esq. The scene here represented is a typical one. We are informed that it was taken on a 'Tuesday of Court,' a big day well known to Greene County people. In the center of the picture a horse sale is in progress and farther up street one is being led away, doubtless sold. The main building seen is the old 'Bull's Head Tavern' which was erected in the early part of the century by John Inghram, the father of Mrs. C. M. Downey, of this place, who remained proprietor for many years. It was then called the 'Union Hotel.' Across the side of the building is dimly seen a part of the sign 'Adams Inn,' placed there when Elijah Adams became proprietor. On the sign upon the post is 'Waynesburg Hotel,' and underneath, the name 'John Strosnider,' who was host when this picture was taken. On the site of this building the present Downey House was erected by R. W. Downey, Esq., deceased, in 1869. Farther up street will be seen old buildings now replaced by fine brick structures owned by the Wisecarver estate and A. F. Silveus, Esq." Postmarked 1905, Waynesburg, Pa.
