Name/Title
Weatherboard covered log cabin of Thomas Slater [1739-1815] on Lincoln StreetEntry/Object ID
2011.2.204Description
The series of captions quoted below indicate that the double house on the right is the weatherboard covered log cabin of Thomas Slater [1739-1815] whose land was purchased for the creation of Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania, at the time of the county's formation in 1796. The captions are contradicting however about the location of these buildings. There is actually a road called South Alley in Waynesburg, but the sloping landscape of that location does not seem to match that seen in the photo. The reference to Lincoln Street on the southern border of the original layout of Waynesburg in 1796, seems more likely to be the place pictured. The numbers mentioned in the captions appear handwritten across the top of the image and may refer to address street numbers.
Caption 1, handwritten across bottom of photograph: "Pipes' house from South Alley."
Caption 2, below caption 1 in another hand:"The double house to the right is the old original Slater log house, the weather boards covering the original logs. Thomas Slater who lived in the house was the first white settler on the site of Waynesburg under a Virginia warrant dated [nothing further written."
Caption 3, handwritten along right side of photograph: "East Lincoln St. From Rear Kathyrn Sayers 1950."
Caption 4, handwritten on reverse of photograph: "Peoples house from south alley (south alley old southern boundary 1796). As of Oct. 1985, #123 and 133 or half of it still stands, the others have been replaced by a parking lot."
