*The identification of Frederick Miller Furman was provided and confirmed in 2014, courtesy of extensive, documented, genealogical research by Lisa Swartz and Judy Burns. Furman's name on the Waynesburg College alumni roll had previously read, Francis Miller Furman. Original records such as Waynesburg College Annual Catalogues and Waynesburg Republican newspaper articles, dating to the 1860s when Furman was a student, consistently refer to him as F. M. Furman or Miller Furman. The two records found at Waynesburg College that say "Francis Miller Furman" are his matriculation card and the reproduction of the 1869 graduating class photograph. Both records were created in the 1930s during a time when Waynesburg College President Paul Rich "Prexy" Stewart led an effort to locate alumni. Neither record indicates Furman's participation and his matriculation card is almost entirely blank. It seems most likely that an error was made obtaining his first name at this time and was written incorrectly on both documents. Swartz and Burns have provided evidence of Furman's life from childhood to adulthood, proving that his name was Frederick Miller Furman and that he is in fact the same man who graduated Waynesburg College, Class of 1869. These records include: his father, Elmore Furman's Estate papers in Greene County, Pennsylvania, which name his children; his marriage record in San Joaquin County, California; business registers, censuses and newspaper articles from San Joaquin County, California; a circa 1875 family-owned photograph for comparison to the Waynesburg College graduate photo; and more.
This photograph is most likely a 1920s-era reproduction of a late-1860s carte-de-visite image. The original photographer is not known. The reproduction was made by Clarence F. Long, Waynesburg, Pa.Collection
