2018.1.184Description
Cabinet card of William Patterson "Pat" Bane [1843-1912] - son of William Bane and Mary Patterson.
Pat served with Company A, 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War. After the war, he was active in veteran organizations and reunions. His height took on legendary status and subsequent exaggeration. At the National Archives, his Compiled Military Service Record indicates his height was 6 feet 5 inches when he enlisted on 16 March 1864, while medical reports in his pension file state that he was 6 feet 9.5 inches tall. Newspaper articles throughout his later life reported his height as between 7 feet and 8 feet. The media popularized him as the "Greene County Giant."
Handwritten inscription on reverse of image reads, "Wm. P. Bane / Co. A 22nd / Penna. Vol. Cav. / Washington / Co. Pa."
Original, professional photograph. There are two photographer stamps on the cardstock, which may indicate that one of the photographers sold their excess cards to the other, who added his mark. Left to right they read, "Adamson, Waynesburg, Pa." and "Rogers & Weaver, Waynesburg, Pa."Photograph Details
